About Us

Meet the Delivery Teams

Our research team includes Research Services, a dedicated NRP Biorepository team, clinical team (including Radiology, Clinical Trials Pharmacy) and senior managers supported by Clinical Research Network (CRN), commercial income, grants and NNUH.

The team is experienced in delivering high intensity, higher risk, translational experimental medicine studies, including early phase clinical trials, device trials and complex mechanistic physiological and pathophysiological studies, covering a wide range of clinical specialities.

We have more than 200 research-active clinicians. There is extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements and electronic research databases, with administrators and data managers specialising in timely entry of large data volumes and able to tailor electronic templates in accordance with study protocols. Delivery staff are members of NNUH governance boards, trial-specific management groups and external networks such as CRN Eastern, UKCRF Network, HCDA Programme Board.

The Clinical team includes the Service Delivery team, Radiology and Clinical Trials Pharmacy, led by Louise Coke, Rebekah Girling and Gail Healey respectively, and the importance of this integration is demonstrated by the immediate response to the pandemic when, to avoid unnecessary hospital visits, IMP was delivered to participants’ homes or to the local private hospital (Spire) to allow continuity of life saving chemotherapy.

The Clinical team works alongside Principal Investigators and close links with hospital clinical and multidisciplinary teams facilitate participant recruitment and high quality of care. The existing core CRF-QI clinical team (the Director of Research Operations, Clinical Lead, Research Matron, Senior Research Nurse, Clinical Trials Practitioner, Senior Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Assistant supported by the CRF-QI Manager and Senior Administrator) work across specialties including commercial, healthy volunteer and experimental medicine studies designed by ourselves and our academic partners (QIB, UEA). They are supported by the wider CRF-Central team, some of whom specialise in paediatric and neonatal research eg the Paediatric Senior Research Nurse, Research Nurses and Midwives. Using a staff pool allows cross cover eg for clinical trials requiring blinded and unblinded teams. The clinical team acts as patient advocate and provide support throughout the study which ensures good participant experience (measured by the Participant in Research Experience Survey, PRES).

Our research staff have a high level of skill and experience of running complex research projects. Training includes Good Clinical Practice accreditation, tailored induction plans for new members and support from senior colleagues during the probationary period.

The QIB/UEA/Orthopaedics team is responsible for the clinical aspects of studies sponsored by our partners, the Quadram Institute Bioscience and UEA, as well as delivering NNUH hosted studies, which are not supported by a specialty research team, including all Orthopaedic studies.

The mission of the Quadram Institute Bioscience is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, therefore the majority of their studies are in this area. UEA concentrate primarily on nutritional based research studies.

NNUH orthopaedic research is tailored to supporting people suffering from poor bone, joint and muscle health, aiming to improve patient outcomes by developing and expanding orthopaedic knowledge. We have current research interests in trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery, preventative treatments, rehabilitation, gait analysis, musculoskeletal biomarkers, prosthetic joint infection and whole gene sequencing biofilms.
